Solar Fire Gathering

A Celebration of the Solar Lifestyle

These colorful prayer flags were decorated by our friends and family who visited the Avalon homestead for our recent SolarFire gathering. Many folks joined us for a weekend of off-grid living, which focused on identifying personal possibilities for radical self reliance. The Avalons lead many tours through their thriving garden and greenhouse, as well as introduced guests to their farm animals. Patrick also gave a tour of our solar power system, eagerly discussing the joys of simple living, as well as our reasons for seeking sustainability.

With so many visitors at Avalon Patrick and I took the opportunity to show-off our solar hot water heater. We explained that all of our hot water is warmed solely by the sun's rays. Many guests tested our hot water heating system by using our fabulous outdoor shower, and all were delighted. Patrick and I were also pleased at our system's performance. We had plenty of hot water and even with the extra lights and laptops plugged in our power system easily met all of our needs.

Aside from all the talk of sustainability, we feasted, made music, and had a great time. Lillith created colorful hair wraps for all of those with long hair, while Mary beautifully hennaed many arms, hands, and feet. I painted faces for the young'uns, with the most spectacular transformation being that of two ordinary girls into a magical unicorn and a mysterious cat.

Patrick along with many friends, prepared countless delicious meals. Saturday night's exquisite Indian feast was particularly tasty with tandoori chicken and beef, yellow dahl, vegetable korma, and basmati rice. All of the beautiful, organic vegetables that were used in the Indian meal were harvested from the Avalon garden. Once the sun had gone down and all were well fed, Jonathan lit an outdoor fire, around which we drummed, danced, and didged. Thank you to all of our friends who contributed to the magic!
